Upper SC State Fair is Open

Opening tonight, August 30th at 4:00 pm, the fair is back with lots of new attractions and rides!

Amusement of America, recognized in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest traveling amusement park, is providing rides like the Crazy Mouse Roller Coaster, Wave Swinger and Free Fall.

New attractions: BMX Freestyle Madness, Moto & BMX Throwdown, Globe of Death, Flores Circus Thrill Show, All American Petting Zoo and a Pig Race. Other attractions include Ken Treadway’s International Rodeo and the Knights of Destruction Demolition Derby.

Railfest 2018 at Greer City Park

School is back in session but there is still fun to be had! On Saturday, September 15th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm is the 3rd Annual Railfest at Greer City Park.

Greer Library Closed for Renovations

The Greenville County Library System closed the Jean M. Smith branch in Greer on Pennsylvania Ave for renovations. The plan is to open in the fall of 2019.

The library was built in 1995 when Greer’s population was much, much smaller. The city has grown more than twice that and technology has progressed even more than the local population within that same time.

Renovations include a much larger children’s area, enclosed space for study and reading, teens will have a dedicated space, 2 smaller conference rooms that seat 4, and one large meeting room with space up to 120. Also planned is a drive-up return, family and nursing rooms.  All that equals an additional 5,500 square feet. Plus there will be more parking!

In the meantime, the community can go to the Burdette Branch in Taylors at 316 W Main St, which is closest. Of course visiting any branch in the Greenville County Library System is an option too. However, Bookmobile will be in the parking lot of Greer First Baptist Church every other Monday from 1:45 pm to 4:30 pm as of August 13th as a convenience.

Have ewe noticed a new addition to the Furman Solar Farm?

Off highway 25 between Cherrydale and Travelers Rest, Furman University put a solar farm together spanning a six acre plot of land. That's old news as it has been there since last year.  However, a new addition is once again calling attention to the side of the road.

Twelve sheep (4 ewes and 8 lambs) moved in this summer!  With just 6 solar panels shy of 3,000, it is no small job to keep the grass from over crowding the panels. By adding a 4-legged crew of our grass munching friends to the solar farm they hope maintaining the grass, especially under the panels will be more managable.

It is a time consuming necessity which currently has to be maintained by hand. Having lawn mowers around the solar panels also poses a risk of damage and the sheep can alleviate that protential problem as well. Hopefully it will be a win-win for all involved!

2nd Facility in Greenville County for Materials Science Corporation

Just South of I-85 on 101 Pelham Davis Circle, the newest facility for MSC is 32,000 square feet and is opening to allow for more R&D opportunities. The company, established in 1970, provides engineering and testing services for the composites industry.  Hiring for 23 new jobs within the facility will likely take place this fall. Based in Pennsylvania, they currently employ about 50 people, most are engineers. There are multiple locations. In addition to the one in PA and 2 in Greenville County there is a 4th location in Alabama. The first facility in the Greenville area is located at SC Technology & Aviation Center. New Climbing Park Coming to Greenville

The Greenville Adventure Center development will include a new climbing park called Flying Ariel Park. Six trails with different levels of difficulty, 48 elements/obstacles and 4 stories tall! The first level begins with balance and as you move up there are ziplines, hanging walls and swinging logs!

Also, there will be a bicycle pump track and a Kids Zip course. They are aiming to break ground this fall and open in the Spring of 2019. We will keep track of progress and post updates as they come!

New Greer Housing Development

Deep River South Development is planning a new development at the intersection of Brockman McClimon & Abner Creek in Greer, SC. If rezoning is finalized and the development itself gains final approval the general plan is to build approximately 130 new homes. The development would feature a mix of single family homes and townhomes on a 31-acre lot. The initial rezoning request was recently approved but rezoning must have a second council approval before it is finalized.

New hotel planned for downtown Anderson SC

Downtown Anderson announced a new name-brand hotel to be developed on the corner of South Main Street & East Market Street. The national franchise hotel has not yet been named. Construction is expected to break ground about a year after final government approval and will be complete within 2 years. Included in the hotel will be conference rooms, a swimming pool, fire pit and meeting spaces. The city is talking about the possibility of adding more parking with a new parking garage however plans for that have not been set in place yet.

The FEI World Equestrian Games held in Tryon, NC

Held every 4 years during the Olympic Cycle, The FEI World Equestrian Games holds 8 equestrian World Championship caliber events.

From September 11th through September 23rd the Games will be held at Tryon International Equestrian Center at Tryon Resort in Tryon, North Carolina. Tryon, NC is located only 45 minutes from Downtown Greenville.

Tickets range from $20 for a simple ground pass to over $1300 for an all-session full games pass. In addition to the games, multiple vendors will be there and exhibitions will take place alongside entertainment and dining.

This 13-day event is anticipated to bring 500,000 spectators, approxiamtely 40,000 to 50,000 a day and is projected to have an economic impact of over $400 million dollars!
