The S.C. Department of Commerce works to recruit new business and help existing businesses grow.  NEXT Upstate LLC received $60,000 in grant funds and Tri-County Technical College received $100,000 in grant funds. These were the only two Upstate organizations to receive the grants. Grant funds came from the Startup Fuel Challenge program created by the Office of the S.C Department of Commerce.  Over $719,000 was awarded across the state. In addition to the two Upstate organizations, seven other organizations across the state were awarded as well. Applicants could request up to $100,000.  The grant to NEXT Upstate LLC received the funds for their new entrepreneur training and virtual and physical skill development program.  The Tri-County Technical College was awarded their grant for the INSPIRE Lab project in cultivating a network of small businesses.
