EPA Awards Funds for Community Clean Ups

Focusing on what is termed “brownfield” properties, the EPA has awarded a total of $1.3 million disbursed across 5 upstate communities.  A “brownfield’ is an abandoned commercial or industrial area that are just sitting there crumbling and rusting away becasue of pollution concerns.  What we see today in our cities was born from the textile industry and although some mills are being converted to apartments, condos and multi-use buildings, some require environmental cleanup.  The goal is to remove the abandoned buildings to make way for housing, recreation areas and businesses that will lead to overall economic growth.
